Course Overview

Step behind the yellow tape and into the world of criminal investigation. In this course, students transition from science learners to forensic investigators, applying the principles of biology, chemistry, and physics to solve complex legal puzzles.

Designed specifically for students at Harlan High School, this course explores the intersection of science and the justice system. Students will develop critical thinking and observational skills as they learn how to collect, preserve, and analyze evidence from simulated crime scenes.

What You Will Learn

  • Throughout the year, we will dive into specialized units including:
  • Crime Scene Basics: The protocols of searching, sketching, and documenting a scene.
  • Trace Evidence: The microscopic world of hair, fiber, and glass analysis.
  • Forensic Entomology: Using the life cycles of insects to determine the time of death.
  • Forensic Anthropology: Identifying human remains and determining age, sex, and ancestry from skeletal evidence.
  • Data-Driven Investigation: Analyzing real-world data sets and digital evidence to build a case.

The Experience

Because this is a non-Skyline curriculum class, the experience is uniquely tailored to current forensic trends. Students will engage with multimedia case studies, analyze external forensic databases, and participate in hands-on simulations that mirror the work of real forensic technicians.
